20001201: Fixing Those Pesky MPREXE and KIX32 Errors
December/2000
|
The tip of the month for December/2000 is from Brian H. We have had a growing number of queries from technicians encountering MPREXE and KIX32 errors when booting up or logging on to Windows 9x clients. Quite often the errors are so drastic that the computer crashes. Brian has been testing a theory over the past few weeks and so far this technique has worked 100% of the time. Initial results from a lab where Richard S tried this are also positive. The solution: delete all *.PWL files from the Windows directory and remove all entries from the [Password Lists] section of SYSTEM.INI. From our preliminary testing, I am optimistic that most of the MPREXE and KIX32 errors that Division techs encounter will be resolved by using this technique. This problem is well-documented on the Web, and has been seen to have a variety of different causes. However, corrupt password list files is the culprit cited most frequently. Please try this solution first. If it doesn't work in a particular instance, you may wish to consult the ideas presented at the following web sites:
