20001206: AMD K6-2 Processors and Windows 9x

December/2000
Tech Note #6

Many technicians are aware of the issues regarding the AMD K6-2 processors and Windows 95. Microsoft has provided a downloadable update which resolves many of them. The update is also available on the WSD1 Backup CDs Issue 17 in the \opsys\win95\updates folder.

However, Brian H adds this note. Some AMD K6-based systems may not shut down properly in Windows 98, even with all the Microsoft Shutdown Updates installed. This can be caused by BIOS incompatibility problems. If you come across this problem, check out the motherboard's web site and download the latest BIOS flash. We have certainly seen Windows 98 shutdown problems resolved by flashing the BIOS with an updated version.

For more information on the AMD K6 issues, Microsoft has two articles available on line (Q192841 and Q234259).
