20001207: Keeping Students off the NT 4 Server

December/2000
Tech Note #7

Mike C discovered recently that students can log on to the NT 4 apps servers. This is not a problem when the server is installed, as it should be, in a secure area. Unfortunately, not all schools have yet implemented this precaution.

If you have an apps server in a public area, you should take the following steps to prevent student users from logging on:
a. Log on to the apps server as an administrator (eg. Tech).
b. Launch User Manager.
c. Choose "Select Domain" from the User menu.
d. Enter "\\sch021" (insert the correct UNC for the server you are on) for the domain. In order for this to work, you must access the apps server's local user database. That is why you must do this on the apps server, and enter the computer name for the domain name in User Manager.
e. Choose "User Rights" from the Policies menu.
f. For the right "Log on locally", remove "Users".
g. Log off and confirm that you can no longer log on to the server as Student.
