The Eight Parts of
Speech
These are the words that you use to make a sentence. There are
only 8 types of words - and the most important is the verb!
- Verbs: action words (be, have, do, work, love, sing)
- Nouns: a person, place or thing (man, town, music,
happiness, monkey)
- Adjectives: tell us more about nouns and pronouns (a/an,
the, 69, big, blue, clever, interesting)
- Adverbs: tell us more about a verb, adjective or another
adverb (loudly, quickly, well, often)
- Pronouns: take the place of a noun (you, she, him,
her, myself, ours, some)
- Prepositions: a "noun" follows a preposition. It is
never followed by a verb (at, in, on, under, over, from)
- Conjunctions: joins two parts of a sentence (and, but,
though, while, yet)
- Interjections: have no real grammatical value (ah,
dear, er, hi, oh, um, well)
