Excerpt: PRIDE 99 By Ben Lawrence "...the honeyed assurance of her answers may belie a vulnerability which is hidden through years of experience. This is related most in her acting career, though which Ross has had her fair share of knocks. "Listen, I always knew that no one was going to bring me a magical script. For black people in Hollywood - for black women - there's a lot of competition. No one's going to make it happen for you." And Ross has had disappointments. Despite being once described as "Hollywood's best kept secret," The Josephine Baker film never materialized and more recently Jean-Jacques Beineix refused her the rights to his cult classic Diva - project which could have been constructed as a significant comment on her life. Yet she seems content to exist in the shaky world of the TV movie, currently featured as a mother and singer in DOUBLE PLATINUM, alongside rising soul star Brandy. "It's the domestic stories that interest me. Taking a fictional story and making it a real story. Family versus career. That's a choice that I have to make every day of my life. My character can't live the life she's living so she decides to go for her dreams." Going for one's dreams is a fairy tale idea that might have been Ross's mission statement. At her acting peak in the late seventies, she played Billie Holiday in LADY SINGS THE BLUES and Dorothy in THE WIZ. Both hopeless dreamers, both torn between truth and fiction and both still very much a part of the Ross persona. "I hope that I'm multi-faceted," she muses, "I've portrayed pain, upset, happiness. And I am still Dorothy. I am still Billie Holiday." And yet she is not one to draw from the experiences of others, believing that her 'method' of acting must always arise from her own experiences. "When I played Billy Holiday, people said to me 'You can't do that you've never been on drugs,' But she had enough sympathy as a character for me to pull something out of my own personality." And this is where more Ross-isms come to the fore. "I mean I could never portray a murderer. I can't find that place in me. I love life too much."

COLLECTOR'S ALERT: A poster for the movie? There are actually two. One features a very common photo of The Supremes and another and very rare one has the groups pictured below the title with a pub shot of The Supremes only released for that poster. It is from the series we have all seen with Diana. Flo and Mary in those impossibly large wigs and wearing short dresses with chiffon from the waist down but the poses we are familiar with (the trio seated as used in Mary's first book and the three standing with arms out) is different in the poster. In the movie's poster Flo and Mary are seated as Diana stands behind them.

The Josephine Baker Story Back to the Top Diana Ross desperately wanted to star and produce for the big screen the story about this legendary French caberart singer. Her passion and belief in the story was so strong that she bought the rights to Ms. Baker's autobiography. But her interest wasn't shared by "the powers that be" that the script languished in film production hell for over a decade, going from one movie company to another. Just when it looked like she was getting the go ahead to produce it for the big screen, HBO beat her to punch by producing it for their cable network starring Lynn Whitfield. The film garnered critical acclaim and Emmy nominations. Diana Ross still has hopes of bringing the story for the big screen, this time with her daughter in the title role. The proposed movie has so long been associated with Diana Ross that some press reports, articles, and biographies have included the film as part of film-o-graphy.
|
|
The script was written with Diana Ross in mind but she turned it down . Steve McQueen was to co-star. It was then offered to Barbara Streisand who opted instead to do "A Star Is Born." The script languished for years until Kevin Costner thought it would be the perfect vehicle for him. He chose Whitney Houston as his co-star and the movie went on to become a world-wide smash, making Whitney Houston a bonifide, bankable movie star.

She eventually passed on the movie and it was then offered to Barbra Streisand who liked the script about a boxing promoter and her relationship with a down on his luck boxer. The movie was not only a money-maker, but it gave Barbra Streisand her first appearance on the disco charts with the title theme...and Ryan O'Neal.

Starring John Travolta, Kyra Sidgewick & Forrest Whitaker John Travolta's best friend is a big fan of Diana Ross. Although she doesn't appear in the film her presence is strongly felt in the beginning of the film. After the movie concentrates on the main character, his best friend hardly even mentions Diana's name. And although several songs appear in the movie, Diana Ross' songs doesn't appear in the soundtrack. Instead, it has a #1 hit, thanks to Eric Clapton and 'Change The World' The song goes on to win the Grammy and The Academy Awards in the Best Song Category. The first mention comes in the first scene with 'Love Child' blaring over Nate's (Forrest Whitaker) truck radio. He is singing to the song as he stops to drop off some things at George's (John Travolta) house. As he gets starts up his car again, 'Come See About Me.' is playing as George ask Nate if he's bringing anyone to his birthday party. Nate: No, you? George: I'm thinking about asking somebody. Nate: When? Today? You don't give too much notice do you? George (in defiance): Are you ever gonna ask somebody? Nate: I always ask Diana Ross...but she never say 'yes' to me. George holds his hand up in a 'stop' motion' and walks away. Nate drives away singing 'Come See About Me.' as the song swells and the scene fades...
Later, at the party, Nate is leaning against the jukebox as he sings to the Supremes. 'Baby Love' blares over the speakers. George walks in behind him, George: Hey Nate...scandal, you and Diana Ross, in the press Nate (turning, a little drunk): Oh man, she'll be so happy on my farm...no stress George: Oh, it's true. Nate: No stress, just heaven.
In the last mention in the movie, Nate is in his living room. He has his headphone on and is scanning the airwaves...as he plays with the controls: Nate: Is there anybody in the void tonight? I'm looking for Diana Ross but I'll accept any voice in the... There is a noise in the other room: Nate: Is that you Diana? It's only George coming through the back door ... Diana Ross is forgotten in the rest of the movie. Surprisingly, none of the the Supremes songs made it to the soundtrack.

BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE Back to the Top Filmed in Black and White, a beautiful video that combines the best years of Diana Ross' life within a caberat setting.
CHAIN REACTION Back to the Top Written by Gibb/Gibb/Gibb. Backing vocals by The Bee Gees. One of her most popular videos, this song is a throwback to her old Motown days and her tenure as a member of the Supremes. Although the song reached only the Top 20 on the American charts, it reached the U.K. #1 pole position. So popular was the song, it was re-released several years later. The video has Diana portraying her 'Supremes' persona with a humorous nod to her "glamourous" image.
Writtten by Scher/Golden Taken from her T.V. special, 'Red, Hot, Rhythm and Blues'
Written by Gibb/Gibb/Jackson. Backing vocals by Michael Jackson. Taking the 'Pieces of Ice' video concept further...the music video, filmed entirely in black and white, was practically a mini-movie of 'The Island of Dr. Moreau'.
