After the noon prayers on the fourth day, the sultan granted an audience for Governor Ali Pasha of Raqqa (whose arrival at the festival was delayed three days) and for the sheiks of the imperial mosques who were to be the guests at that evening’s feast. After the reception, there were more performances and a parade of the boys who were to be circumcised.
In (56b) we see the reception for the sheiks of the
imperial mosques. The sultan is seated on his throne with his sons lined up to one side. The grand vizier stands at the sultan’s right and his sword-bearer and equerry are behind him. The chief of the Black Eunuchs and two black aghas stand to the sultan’s left. Pages are lined up in two rows and the sheiks appear in the foreground. Everybody has his hands raised in a gesture indicating that they are praying. In (57a) we see another display of Hajji Şahin’s abilities together with performances by tightrope-walkers and a procession of boys who are to be circumcised. The boys, a large group of them in the foreground, are being led by surgeons. According to Vehbi, Hajji Şahin was blindfolded and bound hand and foot after which he was placed in a basket that was sealed and tied up and then hoisted to the top of a mast twenty-eight meters tall. By the time it reached the top, Hajji Şahin
emerged from the basket completely freed of his bonds. He pulled out a coffee-pitcher and coffee-cup and poured himself and drank two cups of coffee, dumping the grounds of the second to show that the coffee was still hot. He then tossed all his paraphernalia onto the ground and, after spinning around supporting himself at the top of the mast on his belly, he finally wrapped himself around the mast like a snake and slithered head-first to the ground.Notes
1. Imperial mosques: These
were mosques that were endowed by the sultans themselves. As such they enjoyed a superior degree of prestige.Return to
