On the fourth day, the sultan sent the grand vizier a horse as a reward for his services and loyalty. As related by Vehbi, after the feast the grand vizier retired to his own accommodations while Governor Ali Pasha of Raqqa and Governor İbrahim Pasha of M
araş were admitted to the sultan’s presence to demonstrate their allegiance and be dressed in furs, a long-standing custom of the Ottoman court. Tevkii Mustafa Pasha was also dressed in a robe of sable on this occasion. Then, breaking with precedent, the sultan announced that he was also making a.gift of a horse to his grand vizier (and also his son-in-law). The event depicted here is the grand vizier receiving the horse, which is being delivered by Hasan Agha, the first master of the Horse. In (60b), İbrahim Pasha and his attendants are shown standing at attention. In (61a), the grand vizier’s steward Mehmed Agha (dressed in a green kaftan) stands slightly ahead of Hasan Agha (dressed in blue). The horse, magnificently outfitted with gold and jeweled trappings, has one foreleg raised as if prancing and the animal is being restrained by a sergeant of the Privy Stables, who grasps its reins. A contingent of red-capped bostanjis is arrayed around the horse. With all the events packed into the lower parts of the frames, Levni has taken the opportunity to fill the upper parts with trees, vegetation, and clouds.Return to
