In (79b) the sultan accompanied by one of his sons and two pages is seated in the observation tower in the upper right corner. The poses of the grand vizier and his retinue are quite similar to the ones in
(77b) except that one of the figures is bending forward as he receives a silver candlestick, a present from the candlemakers’ guild for the sultan. Two sackers in the lower right corner lead the way before a procession of guildsmen, some of whom are carrying tall burning tapers. At the end of the candlemakers’ procession in (80a) is a group of clowns and dancers followed by a model of a candle-maker’s shop carried on a litter in which a youth is demonstrating how tapers are made. Bunches of finished candles hang from the eaves of the shop. The next contingent is the barbers’ guild and is led by a two pairs of drum and zurna players. The marcher immediately behind the drum-player on the right is twisting his moustache in a gesture that is still common today. Three figures are carrying the.gifts for the sultan: a silver tray, a silver basin and ewer, and a red bundle that probably contains shaving towels. Bringing up the rear is a barbershop set on a cart in which a patron is bending over a basin that he holds in a towel while a young barber washes his face with water coming from a spouted reservoir suspended overhead. Towels and cloths hang from the eaves.Return to
