Bird's Nest |
1) dead, dry inner bark or cambium bark makes excellent material for the nest. Grasses are too coarse for our purpose |
2) the finer you can separate the fibres, the better. you want that ember to "explode" into flame |
3) start by taking a hand-full of bark and break down the fibres by vigor-ously rubbing your hands together |
4) produce finer fibres by pulling and stretching the bark in different directions |
5) finally, turn the outer edges inward as you work your way around the nest. Don't skimp. It should be about the size of a medium sizes bird's nest, or bigger. The center of the nest should be the thickest. You don't want the ember to burn through prior to having the chance to "flame up". The inner bark from sagebrush, bitter brush, cedar, and several varieties of deciduous trees will work. Dead grasses and pine needles seldom work. So, do it right. Make a good nest. |
