Story

The game began November 4, 2002 at 11:50: the beginning of the lunch period.  The setting was Room 217.  As the survivors began to show up they met their tribe mates, some for the first time.  The groups were given a few moments to get to know each other before the challenge started.

The Student tribe, known as Novo, Portuguese for "Young", found itself two members short, as both Ian and Katie were no-shows.  Ian was away from school that day with a sore throat, and Katie just forgot.

The Teacher tribe, known as Idoso, from the Portuguese for "Elder", was one member short, Caitlin was not there, she had to attend a student’s Council meeting.

The game started immediately , with the teachers and students scrambling to read the instructions.

Immunity Challenge - Tangram Relay

The immunity challenge came in two parts.  The first part tested the Survivor's knowledge of the school, the second tested their problem solving skills. The Survivors were each given a list of instructions, a baton, and seven clues to areas around the school.

The instructions told the Survivors that seven puzzle pieces had been hidden throughout the school.  They had to solve the clues, and then send one tribe-member with the baton to retrieve the puzzle-piece.  Only one Survivor from each tribe could leave the room at a time, and that Survivor had to be carrying the baton.

The first piece was retrieved by Idoso, who was off to a great start. It didn’t take the students long to catch up however, and the tribes remained neck and neck for the entire match.  After only 10 minutes both tribes had gathered six of the seven pieces, but neither group could solve the fourth clue: Sometimes the answer is right under your nose.  Both of the teams sent out a scout to check out possible places for the solution (Foods Room, Cafeteria, the room directly below.)  Tara left for the students, and Wayne left for the teachers.

After three minutes and no sign of either member, the tribes began to get worried and searched for alternate possibilities for the clue.  All of a sudden the teachers became determined to summon Wayne back into the room (no one else could leave because Wayne had the baton.)  They called the office on the intercom to request that Wayne be paged to room 217.  Idoso was foiled however when Novo began shouting to drown out the teachers message.  After the third attempt the secretary became angry, and asked if any teachers were in the classroom.  She threatened them not to call again.  However, Scott had different plans.  After waiting a few moments he caught the students off-guard and called once more.  Before Novo could react, Scott successfully asked the secretary to page Wayne to 217.

Wayne arrived almost immediately, but Tara had also heard the page, and had assumed that Idoso had located the final piece.  She made her way back to the classroom.

As soon as Wayne arrived he tossed the baton to Hayley who snatched the final puzzle piece from under a desk in the classroom, under their noses the entire time.  Idoso began work on their puzzle.  It wasn’t long before Tara arrived, out of breath.  She passed the baton to Tiffany, who swiftly threw it to Danielle. Danielle was sitting atop the desk,  and she grabbed the piece quickly.  The tribes were only halfway through the challenge, and still dead even.

The tribes now needed to solve the infamous Tangram Square.  The seven pieces (seen above) fit together to make an infinite number of designs.  But only one of those infinite number of solutions was  the square.

The second phase of the challenge began, just as Caitlin from Idoso walked in the door, looking distressed. After apologizing for her tardiness and announcing that she had been delayed by the Student’s Council meeting, she began to help with the Tangram Puzzle.

The tribes wasted no time starting work on their puzzles.  After 5 minutes of no progress, and time in the lunch hour running out, the tribes were given a hint: the location of the two largest triangle pieces.  Even with the hint both Idoso and Novo continued to struggle with the challenge.  Time was reaching critical  as the game could not run into the next class period.  The tribes were given a second clue: the location to the medium sized triangle.

Only 20 seconds after the second clue was issued Novo had figured out the positions of the remaining four pieces, solved the puzzle and won immunity, sending Idoso to the first Tribal Council.

Tribal Council - IDOSO

With little time left in the lunch hour it was a rushed first tribal council.  The teachers, upset at losing the first challenge, complained about having to vote someone off.

In the end, the accepted that they had not choice and the votes were read:

Caitlin

Rosanne

Five was enough. Ms. Caitlin Anderson became the first person voted out of Survivor High.
