After researching the Livingstone family for over 10 years I have now been able to trace their origins to Kilsyth in Stirlingshire thanks to Ancestry.co.uk putting transcriptions of the Scottish census online.  Prior to that the earliest Livingstone or Livingston as they appeared to be then was John. He married Jean Allen on 25^th January 1800 in Dalry, Ayrshire and both were described as being "of this Parish"  However the census of 1841 shows that John was born outside the county of Ayrshire  between 1775 and 1780. Neither John or his wife are in Dalry in 1851. However I have now found John aged 72y with his son, also John in Campbeltown, Argyll and his place of birth is given as Kilsyth.
