Robert Livingstone had moved to Blackburn by the 1881 census when he was lodging with Janet Blain, a widow originally from Wigtown, Scotland. Although this is where his mother came from I have no evidence that Janet and Robert were related.

Family rumour states that Robert was a drunkard who left his family and returned to Scotland where he died. I asked a researcher to look at the Scottish death indexes but she was unable to find an appropriate entry. However Robert is not with his young family in 1891 or indeed anywhere in Blackburn. By 1903 his wife Catherine, now a widow  remarries William Bramwell 16 years her junior.

I have searched the GRO death indexes and have the death certificate of the most likely entry, although the age is not quite correct. A Robert Livingstone aged 48 years died in Kirkdale, Liverpool in March 1899, he was a night watchman. Research at the Archives in Liverpool proved inconclusive, the burial entry only giving the most basic information. Any suggestions for further research would be gratefully received.

Have you come across "my Robert" during your research? If so,  please e-mail me.
