Divaalee [Kaartik Maas - New Moon Day of Krishn Paksh]
Divaalee or Deepaavalee: This festival consists of five grand festivals in a row. These festivals start from the 13th day of the Krishn Paksh of Kaartik Maas. That day is Dhan (wealth) Teras (thirteenth day) and is commemorated by buying some utensil. Although it is customary to buy a brass utensil on this day, but now people buy all kinds of utensils, even China utinsils. Next day comes Narak Chaudas. This day Narakaasur Raakshas was killed. It is called Chhotee Divaalee too. This day the lamps are offered to gods and ancestors and some rich people start their lighting from this day. Next, on the New Moon day, comes Divaalee. After Dushaharaa, people clean and paint their houses after the four-month rainy season. This day all houses and markets are decorated with lights. Markets are full of people to see lights of other houses and market and for some shopping too. Fireworks are used by children and adults alike. Lakshmee Jee is worshipped today for wealth. The legend goes that Lord Raam came back from His 14-year Vanvaas (exile) to Ayodhyaa this day. To celebrate His coming back to Ayodhyaa, Ayodhyaa people did so much lighting in their houses and markets. Before this lighting was done by earth lamps, but now most lighting is done by electric bulbs. The next day, on Padvaa (Pratipadaa), Govardhan Poojaa is performed. This day Lord Krishn lifted Govardhan Parvat (Hill) on His pinky finger and kept it there for seven days and seven nights to save Brij village from Lord Indra's anger - heavy rainfall. This festival is very popular in Brij and Mathuraa area of Uttar Pradesh. This day people make Govardhan Jee out of cow dung, worship it in the evening. In the day time as many foods as possible are prepared for Lord Krishn. Even in the temples such foods are prepared and distributed as Prasaad. The next day is Yam Dwiteeyaa or Bhaiyaa Doyaj. This day brothers go to sisters' house to have Teeka. This is also brother and sister festival, in which sister naturally cares for her brothers.
