This day people observe fast for the happiness and welfare of their household and family, and since anybody can do this, so anybody can observe this festival. The fast is broken by seeing the star in the evening.

People make sesame seed dishes this day, eat them and give them as alms to Brahmins. Women take out some of this food to give to their in-laws etc. as Baayanaa.
