Bad Amaavasyaa [Jyeshth Maas - New Moon Day of Krishn Paksh]
This day is celebrated by the married women whose husbands are alive. It is also called Vat-Saavitree Vrat (fast). Women observe fast and worship Bad tree (Bargad tree or Banyan tree) with the thread straight coming from the Charakhaa (spinning wheel). This festival is in the appreciation of Saavitree's efforts to bring life back to her dead husband. This Kathaa also comes in Mahaabhaarat. Its story is like this: There was a king who did not have any child. He was very much worried about it. So he did Tapasyaa and got the child. He got a beautiful girl after some time. He named her Saavitree. When she grew up in a fine young woman, the king asked her to find a boy for herself. She took some helpers and started her journey. She roamed in many lands but could not find the boy of her liking. She became very sad. When she was returning in a sad mood she found a young boy cutting some wood. She liked him, she talked to him, and came back. The king asked her whether she had chosen any boy for herself. Her maids told the whole story to the king. The boy was of a son of a king too, but they had lost their kingdom. His parents were blind. Now king called an astrologer and asked him to tell about that boy. The astrologer told the king, that everything was all right except that he had only one year to live. The king became very sad and asked Saavitree to choose any other groom for herself. Saavitree said, "Dear father, when a Hindu girl chooses any boy for herself, she is married to him till death. I will marry him only." The king could not help, and married his dear daughter to that boy - named Satyavaan. Time was passing by. Satyavaan's life remained only three days more. Saavitree started keeping fast. On the last day of Satyavaan's life, when Satyavaan got ready to go to forest to bring wood in the morning, Saavitree insisted that she would also go with him. Satyavaan explained everything about the woods, but Saavitree wouldn't listen. At last Satyavaan had to take her with him to the woods. Only after a couple of hours work, Satyavaan complained of severe headache. Saavitree did not panic. She knew that Satyavaan's time had arrived. She asked her husband to climb down. She kept his head in her lap and asked him to lie down. She started massaging his head but his headache wouldn't go. In the meantime, Saavitree saw a deep blue complexioned man coming riding on a he-buffalo. He was Yam Raaj Jee who came to take Satyavaan's soul. He came nearer and took out a miniature Satyavaan from Satyavaan's body and carried it with him. Satyavaan died at the same moment. Now Saavitree had nothing to do with Satyavaan's body. She followed Yam Raaj for a long distance. After that she could not go with Yam Raaj, so she asked Yam Raaj, "Who are you? And where are you taking my Satyavaan." Yam Raaj replied, "I am Yam. I keep account of every thing. Your Satyavaan's life span has ended, that is why I am taking him with me. Go back now, you cannot come further with me." Saavitree said, "You are taking my husband and you are telling me that I should go back. What will I tell my blind in-laws that I have lost their son?" Yam Raaj said, "I am pleased with your concern to your parents-in-laws, ask for any Var (express your desire). There is nothing, I cannot give." Saavitree said, "If you are pleased with me then grant me my parents-in-law's eyes. They should be able to see." Yam Raaj said, "Granted. Your parents-in-law will be able to see from this moment." and started his journey. After some distance, Yam Raaj noticed that Saavitree was still following Him. He said, "Whatever you wanted, I gave it to you, now what do you want? You should go back." Saavitree said, "You are taking my husband with you, I cannot go back without him." Yam Raaj said, "I am pleased with your persuasion, ask another Var." Saavitree asked for the lost kingdom of her parents-in-law. It was also granted from the same moment. After going for some distance Yam Raaj noticed that Saavitree was still following Him. He asked, "Why are you still following me? Whatever you wanted, I gave it to you,. Now go back, because you cannot come further with me." Saavitree said, "Both the Vars were for my parents-in-laws. I did not ask anything for me. Please this time you give something to me." Yam Raaj Jee said, "Sure, you ask me anything, I will give it to you. I am very much pleased with you." Saavitree said, "I wish that I should be the mother of hundred sons." Yam Raaj Jee said immediately, "Be it like this." and started walking. After a few moments, Yum Raaj Jee noticed that Saavitree was still following Him. This time Yam Raaj Jee got angry. He said, "Look what you have wanted, I have given it to you. Now what? Now this is the last point. You cannot come with me any more." Saavitree said, "Hey Yam Raaj, I also do not want to come with you any more. I was just wondering that you have granted my wish of becoming the mother of hundred sons, but you are taking my husband with you. How will this happen?" This time Yam Raaj Jee was caught unaware. He said, "Saavitree, you won, I lost. I give your husband back to you. Live long, live happily, this is my bliss." And Yam Raaj Jee went away. This is how Saavitree got her husband back. And not only her husband but also her parents-in-laws eye sight and lost kingdom too. God should give the same power to every woman so that they can live as Suhaagin for life long.
