Frederich Schmidt and Anna Konigshof left Breitungen, Germany to settle in Niles, Michigan. They sailed from Bremen, Germany on the SS Ottillie and docked in New York at Castle Garden on April 26, 1861, 2 weeks after the onset of the Civil War. Ellis Island, NY would not open for another 30 years. Their destination was listed as Pennsylvania, though they may have changed their plans and travelled directly to Michigan. It is known that they arrived in Michigan before the 1870 census.

A portion of the family changed its name from Schmidt to Smith in the 1880's. Uncle Herman Smith, then of Massachusetts, published a book in 1942 by M. Barrows & Co. about their 1880's Niles, MI family and their talented cook, Stina, from Alsace, Lorraine.
Carrie Belle Ives' ancestors were French Huguenots, the name originally St. Eives. Her maternal grandfather, Marsena Brooks, from Boston, married Sarah Boss of Albany, NY, settling in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. They had nine children, including Carrie Belle's mother Elmyra Louise Brooks and her twin brother Alfred, who may have been born in Buffalo, NY on May 6, 1833.
