The thumbnails on this page were taken in February, 1999 during Quebec City's Winter Carnival. The main feature of the Winter Carnival is the International Ice Sculpting contest. Countries from around the world compete in taking a hugh hunk of snow (not ice) and carving the design within 72 hours. They usually start on Friday and work all through the weekend, including nights, for the competition on Sunday. Some really nice scuptures come out of the couple ton pieces of snow.
The first picture is of Old Quebec and the St. Lawrence River. On Sunday there were boat races. The competitors had to push there boats over the ice and paddle when they hit water. First to reach the other side won. The second picture is in the Parc des Champs-de-Bataille. Note the top of the park bench. The roadway had 3 feet of snow packed down on top of the road.

The next two pictures are snow sculptures that businesses had done outside their establishments along the rue Grande-Allee.

The First picture was taken Friday night around midnight. Some of these sculpters worked through the night on Friday and Saturday to finish their projects for Sundays compitition. The second picture is the finished sculpture. If I remember correctly there was approximately 20 sculptures.

Saturday was cloudy and cold. As you can see from the first picture there is no sun. Note the guy in the funny hat working on his sculpture. The next picture is Sunday and the sun is out. This is the finished product.
