Surftrips
Our little Surfers Paradise(Summer-1999)-Spain:Playa de Oyambre/ Playa de Meron(Cantabria)
So I was fed up with Le Porge. I had come there, seen it and got bored with it. It's too expensive, to crowded and ther are too many Unfriendly arrogant French people who think the ocean is theirs. But still I had to go there for at least one day because I didn't know where I would go in Spain and I wanted to do that without having to rush to a campsite because everything was closing. So I stopped at Le Porge for a few days untill Jo and Eva would arrive there. We had planned to make the trip together and it was easier that way. Off course I met a lot of people who Ihad seen the year before. It was like coming home. Not something you expect from a vacation. The waves were horrible. A very big crashing shore-break and pounding dangerous waves in the back. Not yet my cup of tea. It was spectacular to watch tough. The local surfers from Bordeaux loved it. They attacked the waves like real pro's, something I had only seen when I went to buy my first board at Lacanau. Me, I practiced my take-off as much as I could. Something I would benefit from in Spain.
Off course I met some other dudes. One I will never forget. The dude was a German Rasta. YA MAN. He smoked all day, played some tabletennis, and smoked some more. And that were no cigarettes. Wich was nice.......
Anyway, after a few days, my friends arrived and we left for Spain.

Where would we go? Good question. Especially since we wanted to be in a great surf-environment, there had to be clean water, no tourists, good weather and a good campsite. So we took out the superb and ever saving Stormrider Guide and searched for a good spot that would satisfie our needs. Playa de Langre, playa de Meron and Oyambre. That were our 3 possiblle choices we selected from Cantabria.
We took Oyambre because it is a nature reserve and usually uncrowded, and a mile further we would have Playa de Meron. Also there seemed to be a building from Gaudi in Comillas, a town not so far away from Oyambre. We would be close to the mountains, what I love. Oyambre it was.
We would meet in Comillas at the campsite. (Terrible big crowded campsite, bwaargh) We stayed there for the night and drove to Oyambre.

- Wow. What a setting. A mile long beach with 2 or 3 good breaks.
A campsite almost on the beach. And this all in the middle of a nature
reserve. Groovy. Rippin. I don't know how to describe it but for me it
was like I arrived in Surfers Paradise. We installed ourselves at the
place the nearest to the sea available. There was only one thing that
sucked. THE FRENCH
!!! It was amazing. They are becoming like the
dutch. Everywhere you come they have them in stock. Off course I'm
overreacting at the moment because next to us there was a very
friendly french couple from Perpignan. Really cool people. I was really
sad when they left. The surf was so great. We had all types of waves.
Big, medium, small. Smooth, steep, rippin. Whatever. But never
boardbreaking. For beginners like us it is important that we can learn
in a good calm environment where you don't have to worry too much
about aggressive french locals. We met some Spanish surfers. Cool calm people. All the people there were friendly and calm. Ok, don' expect them to jump either because than they get nasty. I would too. "Magnana" is the keyword. And I carry it with me.

Every evening we went to Bar Filipinas in Comillas. Great food, great atmosphere and again friendly people. It wasn't much but it was real. If there was no place available, you had to drink a beer at the counter and wait in line until it was your turn. Reservation was impossible. But once you were seated you suddenly became the king(or queen) of the evening. You were treated on a feast of delicious foods and wines and served with humour and grace. And all this for about 1500 pesetas. And that is because I'm a big eater. A normal person is setled for 1000 pesetas. So everyday we surfed until sundown and then we went to our favourite restaurant where, after a certain time, they started laughing allready when they saw us coming.

After 2 weeks Jelle arrived. I was really happy. He is one of my best friends and we go back since we were 6 years old. He was the one who showed me surfing for wich I am really gratefull. With him my surfing got even more intensive. My drinking and smoking also but that's what vacation is all about. We took some pictures which will soon be on this site I hope.(He said kicking himself on his lazy head)
At the end of Jelle's stay we went touring around from spot to spot for a few days to plan our next vacation. We went to Los Locos, Liencres, Playa del Sardinero, Mundaka, El Brusco, Ogeia, La Arena, but most of al Playa de Langre. Wow. Awesome, man. Dude, I couldn't believe my eyes. So beautiful. I will go there this year. I'm shure of that.

In France we past by Biarritz, Anglette, Hossegor, etc. But that was way to crowded and flat anyway.
We met Jo en Eva in Le Porge were they would take Jelle with them to Belgium. I stayed there for another week and went to watch Lacanau Pro. Great surf man.

After that I went back to Belgium. Back to work but I knew it wasn't possible. I had been in Spain too long. I will go and live there. 100% certain.
