What's needed?
From the Space Toys page, I used the following
.PDF-files:
- One "cabinandlander", for the Command Module and the Aft Compartment, and also for the legs.
- One "2modules", for the Transporter Pod and the Spine ladder. You will get some pieces left over, but once you have started down this slippery slope I'm sure you'll find some use for them!
- One "3cubes", and
- One "2cubesandstruts". These are for the Access Corridor and the Landing Pods, and of course for the reinforcing struts between the parts.
You might also wish to consult the
General Instructions for building this stuff, especially if you are new to the Paper Models hobby.
This is what the pieces looked like before assembly, from left to right: one cabin, three cubes, one module, and finally a drive block between two more cubes. The drive block is made from the "lander" pieces in the "cabin and lander" sheet. The hatch on top of the drive block will be hidden by the spinal ladder, so it's not really necessary, but since it was on the sheet....
These are the small parts (aka: the Fiddly Bits) needed to complete the structure: Four landing legs, with pads and struts, 36 short struts to support the pieces, and one spinal ladder made from a girder from the "2modules" sheet. The girder piece needed a slight modification to be used as spinal ladder: To get the necessary thickness I cut about three millimeters outside the lines, and folded it so that the glue tabs would form the sides and the extra paper became the new glue tabs. There are also four small and four larger thruster exhausts, more than can be found on the sheets listed above. Here I cheated again: With a bit of cutting and pasting (from the .GIF files available from the Space Toys page) I produced four enlarged ones for the main drives.
Here is a .GIF of the customized ladder and exhausts.
