Adelaide, South Australia South Australia now has a new slogan. Not only are we the home of fine wine, we are also now known, world wide, as the Rose Capital of Australia.
We are now known as "The State of Wine & Roses.
![]() Adelaide is the Capital City of South Australia. This view is looking towards the south from the River Torrens up King William Street - "a wider thoroughfare than bisects any other Australian city." Readers Digest Illustrated Guide to Australian Places. Adelaide is Australia's fifth largest city with a population of just over 1 million people, being Sister City to Auckland, New Zealand; Austin, Texas and Georgetown, Malayasia.. We boast clean air and friendly people. Colonel Light planned the layout of the city - a design that dates back to Roman times but makes us a unique city. Adelaide is set around five squares (Victoria, Light, Whitmore, Hurtle and Hindmarsh) and bordered by the River Torrens, surrounded by 850 hectares of Parklands. Within these Parklands, the people and visitors of Adelaide can visit the lovely Japanese Garden and Rose Garden on South Terrace and the historic Adelaide Botanic Gardens on North Terrace. Here you will see the Bicentennial Conservatory, the largest greenhouse in the Southern Hemisphere which contains a rainforest of 3,000 to 4,000 plants from Australasia and south-east Asia. Adelaide is not on the average overseas visitor's itinerary; however I suggest you do some searches on the net and see what we have to offer. We are the lowest priced "cost of living city" in Australia and we can offer you a variety of international restaurants, all in one Street. Choose from Thailand, Argentina, China, Italy, Greece, Vietnam, Turkey - in Rundle Street you can do all this. Rundle Street, East End of Adelaide Once a thriving area with inner city dwellers and the local produce markets, the East End in the 60's became very run down and offered very little to locals and visitors alike. However in the early 80's Adelaide was the first Australian City to get the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The circuit was built using the current roads around the Adelaide inner city area and was within walking distance to Rundle Street. ![]() The restaurants that were already established picked up more business during the hectic week and those leading up to the Grand Prix and it wasn't long before new restaurants opened. With the ideal weather in Adelaide for "al fresco" dining, the east-end restaurants soon took advantage of the long summer days and balmy nights and Rundle Street rapidly became a maze of sidewalk tables and brightly coloured umbrellas. The Formula 1 has since moved to Melbourne (without the wonderful atmosphere Adelaide managed to inject into it), however we have been left with a wonderful legacy of those few gala days, for 1 week of the year, that occurred for the 11 years we held the Grand Prix. ****** You can cuddle up to a koala at Cleland National Park (about 25 min drive from the CBD) or visit the BEST wineries in Australia within a 1/2 hr drive from the city at the Southern Vale Wineries). What about fulfilling that dream and taking a balloon ride in the early hours of the morning in the Barossa Valley (wine growing area to the north of Adelaide). Or allow a few extra days and take in the natural beauty of Kangaroo Island - a few hours by sea... or even faster by light aircraft. South Australia produces over 80% of all the wine produced in Australia. Allow me time to visit the Southern Vale, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and Hills wineries with the new digital camera to show you our wineries and allow some of the cellar masters to say G'day and Welcome.. (Since this site set up in 1998, we have acquired a caravan and also a digital camera - we shall visit and capture images to tempt you on the delights of South Australia to include us in your travel plans.
