Swasthya Program
A Community Health Partnership

Volunteer Information

Ongoing Projects

Swasthya’s daily operations are carried out by five nurses, or Community Health Workers (CHWs).  Volunteers are needed for training and guidance in the following areas:

Data collection and analysis
The CHWs maintain detailed records regarding their villages, home and health center visits.  Further, this past year, family folders have been designed to document the medical health history of every family the CHWs evaluate. Volunteers are needed to compile relevant statistics from these folders and other records to aid in evaluation and analysis of the community Swasthya serves.  Volunteers are needed to assist the CHWs in synthesis of the results and it’s applicability to new and ongoing programs.  Finally, a data collection and analysis volunteer would train the CHWs to maintain records and write reports on the Swasthya computer.
Cytology training in sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and PAP smears:
Currently the CHWs provide basic gynecologic care and primary screening for cervical abnormalities.  The current method of cervical cell abnormality detection is the use of vinegar.  Swasthya would like a Cytology volunteer to develop a STD and PAP Smear detection protocol.  This protocol would include development of a training program for a lab technician, a CHW and the gynecology physician.
Continuing education workshops on nutrition, menstruation, birth control, well woman exam, clinical skills, and sensitive communication
Volunteers are also always needed to bring new information on such health issues and help the CHWs maintain the most up to date and accurate information that is also culturally sensitive and appropriate.
Networking with local and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs):
Swasthya, being the only all female community health project in Sringeri, needs volunteers to develop a working relationship with area NGOs. The nurses must serve as a referral service and promote open communication and cooperation across local organizations in order to provide complete services for the communities they serve.  Further, having ties with other local organizations will enable the CHWs to have a support network through which they can share experiences, resources, and ideas and learn from one another.
Development of an alcoholism and psychiatric community education program
Volunteers are needed to work with the nurses in developing an alcoholism and psychiatric mental health program.  Currently the CHWs are working with a psychiatrist to identify, refer and care for patients with common psychiatric disorders, such as depression. Also, this past year, volunteers have assisted the nurses in evaluating local attitudes towards alcohol, the extent of alcohol abuse among families, and local efforts on education, prevention and treatment of alcoholism. Volunteers are needed to continue these evaluations, either through further research and community surveys, or through development of community health programs.
Maintenance of creative, educational workshop techniques
Volunteers are always needed to bring new and innovative ideas for conducting interactive community education workshops and programs.
