Deck building is one of those things that you are either good at or not. Building a deck requires time and patience. One good way to build a deck is to look around Star Wars: TCG sites to see what others are building and why. I don't mean to "Net Deck" (as many see this as a problem), but rather to just take a look at the cards they are incorporating into their decks and why. Do this with several sites or forums. Also, join a forum where you can learn strategies from other players, whether strategies on cards or decks. A good strategy is the Jedi decks. There are plenty of them, whether Light or Dark, in the game. There are also plenty of cards that can get you force, such as Wedding of Destiny (Attack of the Clones) or Underworld Connections (Attack of the Clones). Cards like Maul's Strategy (Sith Rising) or Capture Obi-Wan can help as well as they deny players force while adding to yours. Mace Windu (A) (Sith Rising) and Yoda (B) (Attack of the Clones) will also give you force. Incorporating these cards into a Jedi deck will help your strategy in many ways. In making a Jedi deck you must also remember to gain force for Battle cards. Not leaving enough force for Battle cards will leave you at a disadvantage. In making a Jedi deck you must learn to manage your force. Choosing Missions and Battle cards also depends on your strategy. As mentioned above, Jedi decks require Missions and Battle cards that can help generate force for you. If you are going to have large units with high build costs than you must generate some build points. Extra build points, other than that of the build point roll, can help you greatly. Incorporating cards like San Hill (A) (Attack of the Clones) or Departure Time (Attack of the Clones) will help generate some build points for your strategies. The newly banned location Kessel System (Rogues and Scoundrels) would have helped you. In a friendly game at home it can really help you. Also helping you in the build department is Contingency Plan (A New Hope) which will remove build points you already have and give you that many on your next turn. Departure Time (Attack of the Clones) allows you to discard a unit and gain build points.Denial decks are very frustrating for those who play against them. If you are going to build one of these, be prepared to get snickers, angry looks and even punched out. Denial decks deny the opponent something, whether it be force, build points or units. Even actions can be denied as well as cards. Incorporating cards like Slumming on Coruscant (Attack of the Clones) to deny cards or Chase the Villian (Attack of the Clones) to deny your opponent the ability to retreat when they most needed, can really help you. Choosing when to deny them these things is up to you. Do it too early and it may not help, do it too late and, well, it's too late. Cards like Destroy Alderaan (A New Hope), which discards your opponent's hand, and Imperial Blockade (A New Hope), which denies your opponent build points, will greatly hinder your opponent's plans. Capture the Falcon (A New Hope) will tap a unit of your choice and the Character Dianoga (A) (A New Hope) will do the same. Tapping a unit will frustrate the opponent as they will not be able to attack you while you will be able to attack them. Knockdown (Attack of the Clones) also taps a unit. Cards that can really help in a deck are cards that allow you to gain the advantage unexpectedly. Having cards in your deck like Reassemble C-3PO (Sith Rising), which removes damage from a unit, or Disturbance in the Force (A New Hope), which denies your opponent the use of abilities, can really help your situation. Allowing yourself to do damage to a unit while your opponent can't do anything is key, like Darth Maul (C), which allows you to pay force and your opponent can't use Evade to cancel his damage. Coupled with cards like Surge of Power (Attack of the Clones), which gives you +x power, and Dark Speed (Attack of the Clones), which gives you +x speed, a unit can be very powerful giving you the upper hand. Using a card like Mending (Attack of the Clones) to remove damage while gaining force can be a big help as well. |
