Darkness Comes To Those Who Wait

Here I am standing on top of St. Sebastian?s bluff. I come here to see the world. It is this place that I know so well and this place, here something looms before me, magnetic like. Every day I come here, listening, waiting for what, I don?t know.

One day I came to the bluff, an echoing song rumbled in the back of my brain. A distant humming, beckoning me to reach out. It was late in the evening, my sandals knocked heavily against the dirt. ?What do you want?? I asked, so ready for an answer. The humming continued, ?Hello?? I queried. A liquid warm voice entered my mind, You have come. I did not think you would listen.

I jumped back; the crystalline waters sparkled light blue, almost pale green. "What are you?" I asked the mysterious 'voice.' I am everything you want. Everything. Everything? Its voice flowed from my temporal lobe to my occipital where he materialized before me. The image was faint; he didn't even look coherent. Welcome, My Dear. I stepped back, it couldn't be. No way could there be someone floating on top of St. Sebastian. Come here. You do not need to stand that far away. I was trembling now, backing up slowly I saw the image grow distant. Please do not, just open up, he whispered.

I turned around to find the path, but there was only he who stood there on top of St. Sebastian looking at me. Open up and it can be. I closed my eyes? Today was the day that I was supposed to meet Johann at St. Sebastian, but something told me different. It was just an overactive imagination working overtime from my creative writing class. "So, Buckley, you wanna go for a walk down at St. Sebastian?" The German Shepherd barked happily, "I guess that's affirmative. Maybe Johann will be there?" I hoped I was right, but lately Johann has been forgetful. He's sweet but very unreliable; he said it would work out, but that was months ago and still no ring.

Buckley pulled at his leash, anxious to get to the park. He almost ripped it in half getting me there. "Whoa! Slow down, boy. There's no hurry, is there?" Buckley turned around to face me; his eyes glowed. He wanted to get there now, wanted Me to get there now.

I stood on the bluff, ?Man, it's deja-vu all over again.? I thought as I looked out; the sun sparkled over the water, a pale green mix into the blue that dominated the water around St. Sebastian. The dream popped into my head at that moment, I stepped up to the edge of the bluff. My sandals knocked the dirt, just like my dream. Soon my feet were at the edge, toes looking over at the rocks below. I closed my eyes and felt free?

"It wouldn't be wise to jump and smash that beautiful body." My eyes darted open; behind me was an old man. He was dressed in a tuxedo, like he was ready for a wedding, he looked familiar. "I remember when Jackie stood there, she was so ready to marry me," he looked sad out at the water. "But I guess it was never meant to be?" he trailed off.

"I'm sorry," I said, not sure of what else to say.

He looked at me, turned and walked away down the path to town. ?Sorry doesn?t bring Jackie back,? he muttered to himself.

You are here, I heard the voice, its warm seductive music in my ears. I am glad.

"Hello? Are you real?" I asked unsure that there would be a response. Yes, I am here, waiting for you to come. "What do you want?" I want you of course. "No, this can't be real. It's just a figment of my imagination, just like... Like the dream.

The dream, did my figment just mention my dream? Yes, it is true. Now open up and see. "No...I..." I trailed off. The voice grew persistent, close your eyes, My Dear. I went to turn towards the path and there in front of me was the water beckoning me into its depths. I tried again only to end up facing the water and the voice.

"What do you want me to do?" Don?t you realize that I am waiting for you? "How?" Just close your eyes. "But I have to get back, I have a paper due Monday and two tests on Tuesday, I just can't go off." Even if it is your fate...

"My fate?" Yes, all you have to do is close your eyes and it will open up to you. "But what about my life here? And Buckley?" Buckley looked up at me; his eyes crystal brown condensed into hazel marble. I heard him bid me with his eyes to go. There was no reason other than the trivial holding me back, besides my roommate would look after Buckley. Are you ready? "No. Not yet." I took from out of my book bag a letter addressed to Lauren. Somehow it seemed so fitting now than when I had written it two years ago. Buckley opened his mouth and I laid the letter carefully inside, "Take this to Lauren, Buck." He turned to go, over his shoulder he winked at me and then was off.

Now, My Dear, are you ready? "Yes, I believe I am."

Come over to the edge of the bluff. I walked over to the bluff and put my sandals right at the edge, just barely hanging on. Now, I want you to close your eyes and open up your mind. The voice melted away and I stood there shaking, yearning for this stranger. As my eyes closed I saw across the way another bluff jutting out into the water. There isn't another side to the sea, at least none that could be seen. It stood there, a dark mass amidst the blue of the sea. Open your mind, he beckoned. "I'm trying." No, you are not! Now try! His voice became angry, not harsh but demanding. Good. Now come to me. "What? You're kidding, right? I'll fall." No, not if you open your mind. Stop thinking in three dimensions, let go and come to me. I didn't want to fall, but I couldn't leave now.

"I come." Now as I step out I see him standing on his bluff, waiting for me, and I realize that I've always dreamt of this. Every night I see him out on his bluff calling to me, only this time I'm finally coming.

It didn't feel like falling or floating, but like there was something holding me up, like an invisible bridge. Come, I have so much to show you here! He sounding excited and I became excited too, there was a hand on my arm.

"Welcome," he said, his voice was just as beautiful in person as in my head. "You've made it? unlike the others,? he whispered.

"I knew I had to come, Love." There before me was beauty incarnate; he was tall and slender, but built like a Greek God. His hands were strong as they held me up, safe hands. Eyes were like the deepest green one could find on earth and long dark auburn hair pulled back in a ponytail.

"Welcome to the dark side," he chuckled, "The other realm where humans dwell." I could see that in one way that was true. "In case you were wondering," he spoke softly, "This is real, only those who desire to be different come and live here. With their desire to be different as strong as it is, there's nothing that can hold them back."

"Why would they wanna leave to come here?"

"This is darkness without light as your side the lightness without dark. And all of us belong someplace, but some, such as you are born where you were not supposed to have been. Me? I was born here and I wait for you." He looked at me. "But not all make it that are supposed to be..." he trailed off...

I looked up at him, it all made sense, but tears were at the corners of his eyes.

The sky filled with stars; how I used to look at the stars, wanting to be elsewhere.

"Come, we must go." He pulled my hand towards a path; it was lined with glowing stones. "The only light we have is artificial, made by the rocks and those glowbaskets hanging from the trees. There," and on the trees were small baskets that glowed. The trees were of all kinds, silver birches, maples, and willows, their bark the colour of darkest midnight. The willows blew in the slight breeze that wrapped itself around me. As we walked down the path, I saw a herd of Plutonian elk pass over the path, their coats the purest blue-black I have ever seen. I also saw Djibouti pigeon-ducks flocking on a silver maple. This world was so beautiful that I never wanted to leave.

Before me stood a cabin, old, almost ancient by the looks of it. He turned to me; ?You are the first to make it here. All the times I have looked for you, yet I have brought others, but no one has made it to the cabin. Usually I just get silly girls who dream of guys that come to rescue them, but they never mean anything that they dream. I believe that they are called 'hoochies.'?

"Oh, so you've met the earthen hoochies," I laughed. "Well, I can't say anything but this," and I leaned over and gave him a kiss.

"Come, let us enter," and he took me in his arms into the cabin. But inside it was no run-down cabin. An immense cavern stretched before me and I was no longer in my clothes, I was cloaked in a red robe, as was he. "Let us be wedded and joined forever, Love." On the walls were tapestries of my world and his: unicorns, tigers, castles, and fountains. We approached an Altar with two candles on it. One blue and one black, both were lit.

Here we became united by the darkness. And in the end on silken sheets of midnight blue and silver we lay with each other. Bodies pressed together, I in White born to White, he in Black born to Black.

A tradition that Kerry and I started in Perkins, on Friday nights, around midnight was that we'd have to make up a fantasy and tell it to the other person, all right up on the spot. Well, this was one of mine, and Kerry liked it a lot, I then decided that this one was worth writing down. This is worth reading, if you ask me...:-)
