One version of how NE RENDA PÉ AYU was born
NE RENDA PE AJU is, unequivocally, the best expression of the popular music in Paraguay. It was written by Manuel Ortiz Guerrero and José Asuncion Flores.
It is the custom in Paraguay as in many latin countries to serenade the girl you love. A young man will stand under his beloved's window and sing to her of his love and desires. Sometimes he will accompany himself other times a whole group of musicians will be with him.
One night, a young man was singing to the girl of his heart. Her father, a jealous man, did not like the young man. He shot the singer, and as the young man died, he is reported to have said: "For coming to sing you my love, I die..."
Shortly thereafter, Flores and Ortiz wrote what was to become the very heart of the guarania.
And that is also why Flores included, in the final part of the song, an authentic funeral march and the words "Santa Maria" which can be heard twice in the symphonic version of this song. Those words were a typical Paraguayan way of trying to ease the pain.
