I no longer have this New Process 435 transmission in my truck, I now have a TH350 which you can learn more about by clicking
Well after three days of work, not constant work anyway, a friend and I got the original  SM-420 out and installed a NP-435.  One of the reasons why it took so long was because up to that point, I never did a tranny swap before.  And my friend and I had a hard time getting the tranny to clear the transmission hump in the floor. The shifter case would hit the opening in the tranny hump and it would not let the tranny slide out of the bell housing.  I didn't want to remove the carpet, and then remove the tranny hump which had new silicone all around it from when I had my clutch replaced at the local shop. So, I though I would try jacking up the rear of the engine.  I used a floor jack and a 2"X4" piece of wood about 10" long and slid it between the oil pan and the bell housing.  Jacked it up then removed the rear engine/tranny mounts, and let the engine back down. The shifter came out and I was able to get the tranny out of the bell housing a least.  But then I found out I had to remove the parking brake bracket thats right behind the tranny, to get the tranny the rest of the way out.

Well after that it was time to put the NP-435 in:)  Well the NP-435 is taller that the SM-420 so I ended up having to remove the tranny hump anyway :(  Man that took a long time to pry it off the floor with all that silicone.  It was a pain in the ... to get the NP-435 to slide in the bellhousing. Took my friend and I hours.  We pushed, shoved and wiggled it untill it slid close enough for the four bolts that hold the tranny, to do the rest of the work.  The paint on the bottom of the tranny doesn't look so pritty any more though.  Once the tranny was in. I tried to use the original drive shaft but it was about an inch to long.  Thankfully, I was given a driveshaft with the tranny when I bought it, and it slid right in.  I thought to myself that I should leave my truck on the jack stands and run the tranny in all gears, so if anything were to go wrong it would still be were I could work on it.  So after starting my truck and driving in second, I heard a really loud screeching noise.  All I could think about was " I hope that's not coming from the tranny."  I ran it in the rest of the gears and it only made that grinding noise in second, third, and fourth gear, and not it first or reverse.  So to find out where the noise was coming from, I let my truck idle in second and went underneath and found the noise coming from the carrier bearing on the drive shaft.  So another friend of mine, who is a mechanic, brought over a new carrier bearing and we started to remove the old one which did not want to come off at all.  The outside of the bearing broke before it slid off.  We used a whole bunch of liquid wrench, and later used heat to expand the bearing to make it come off easier. After it was off, we found very nasty dried up grease and rusty bearings.  That all took about 2 hours. After that I put it back in my truck and drove home:) WOO- HOO!!

It took a while to get used to the new gear ratios.  Here are the gear ratio's and shift patterns for the SM-420 and the NP-435.

1. Inside the truck
2. Blast off :)
1. The NP-435 was so much more quiet than the SM-420. I could barely hear it.
2. Notice how much closer second is to third.  I was going about 40 in second gear and about 70 in third.  I ran out of road so I didnt even make it to fourth gear.  Didn't it sound neat when it decelerated?  Sounded kinda like a big rig.
