Echo was a nice looking nymph, who spent her time on outdoor stuff. She was a pal of Diana (The Huntress) and went along on hunts. But, Echo had a typical feminine problem- she talked too much. She got in trouble with Juno (a Godess), and Juno took away her ability to speak, except to reply to another. She tried to get together with Narcissus, but he rejected her and all the other nymphs. So he was sentenced to feel the rejection of one he loved as he had hurt others! One day Narcissus saw himself in a clear pool of water, he fell in love with his image, but when he reached out to touch and kiss it- it disappeared! He was distraught and could not think about food or anything except the image that he loved, the dude died because he felt that old rejection that he'd laid on others! Later there was going to be a funeral pyre, but his body could not be found, there was only a Narcissus flower in it's place. Pre-Raphaelite artist John Waterhouse painted this work in 1903.
