The Tampa Generals are a wheelchair
rugby team that has been in existence since 1989. Since their inception the
Generals have continued to be one of the top teams in the U.S. Quad Rugby
Association. The Generals boast 3 National Championships and are arguably
one of the most storied teams in the history of the sport.
On
a more personal level the Generals are made up of locals, transplants, and international
players living in the Tampa Bay Area. Since rugby was introduced to the Bay
Area by 12 year coach Terry Vinyard it has seen various elite players develop
in its program. Players such as Dave Gould ('96 Paralympian, USQRA Hall of Fame),
Joe Soares ('96 Paralympian), Dave Ceruti ('96 Paralympian), and Bill Renje
('96 and '00 Paralympian). These players along with a host of others have been
the backbone of the organization.
Now
in their 13th season the Generals have a new face. Vinyard, while still closely
tied to the team, has moved on to coach the Australian Paralympic team. Gould,
a.k.a. Goldie, is now at the helm of the ship which is manned by purely developed
players. Veterans such as Mark Hickey and Dave Ceruti now provide invaluable
leadership to quickly developing players like Vi Vorsane, Brian Sterner, Justin
Stark, Mark Welch, and Scott Burrows.
