Installation and Care
of Stepping Stones
Stepping stones should be installed in the ground on a half inch bed of sand to provide a level surface, an even weight distribution and to allow water to drain away from the back of the piece.
Dig out a space deep enough for the stone and the sand so that the stone will be at ground level when installed. The stones may be brought in for the winter, although it is not necessary. It is possible for individual pieces of glass to crack due to weather conditions. Normally if this happens, the crack will be a hairline crack across the piece and will not be noticeable.
The best way to protect your stone from the elements is to seal the stone with an outdoor concrete sealant (available at stained glass or hardware stores). The entire stone should be sealed. Excess sealer can be wiped off the glass.
