I
Can't Find A Man Who Fits The Bill
Her love life may be hot-ting up in The Bill, but
stunning Tania Emery admits she hasn't had a boyfriend
for FOUR years.
"I don't want to go into details about my sex life
but I haven't had a serious relationship for a long
time," she confesses. "And you can draw your
own conclusions from that." Which makes it
particularly difficult this week as her character, DC
Kate Spears, has some hot scenes with DC Mickey Webb
(Chris Simmons).
The 25-year-old, who joined Sun Hill nick at the start
of last month, says: "Being on TV's supposed to be
a bit of an aphrodisiac, isn't it? I love men - they're
fantastic. I can't wait until somebody comes into my
life who I think is wonderful and treats me well, and we
have an equal loving relationship. But it's just not
here at the moment. I'm obviously not ready for
it."
Mind you, Tania, who lives alone in south London, is the
first to admit she's not the easiest women in the world
to please. When she thought one boyfriend was putting
her down at a dinner party she slapped him in front of
everyone. And when she felt a man pinch her bum on the
Tube, she screamed at him at the top of her voice.
"I'm a pritty fiery person," she says,
"When I get the bit between my teeth I don't let go
and I make sure I get whatever I want. "If that
means blowing a gasket or crying my eyes out, so be it.
I'm not scared to show my emotions and do whatever it
takes to get what I want. But I don't think I put men
off and don't consider myself a man-eater. I just think
if you're honest and straightforward with people you
tend to get it back. If I'm pissed off with someone I
let them know. I'm not surprised men don't ask me out,
because I don't go to clubs and stand in a short dress
waiting for some bloke to come and pinch my arse."
But Tania, who also wants to learn kick-boxing, is
anxious she doesn't come across as too hard.
"When it comes down to it I'm an incredibly gentle,
sensitive person - but you have to put on a front. I'm
dark with dark eyes, and whereas blondes are depicted as
sweet, innocent types, where're seen as mysterious,
devil women. But we're not. We're nice. We can be
friendly." Since joined the cop drama her life has
been taken over by work. When she's not on set she'd
busy learning her lines. It sounds like a lonely
existence. "I haven't had a boyfriend for four
years," she sighs. "That's quite a long time
to be alone, I suppose. I'd live to meet somebody, so
please put out an add for me. It could say, If you like
the look of Tania and think you could get on, contact
the Lost Property Office, The Bill. I've a great job, a
lovely flat, a great family and great friends. A
boyfriend would be fantastic, but I'm certainly not
going to hang round pleeadilly.
"I've never had a relationship of any length - the
longest was six month. I'm not incapable, it's just that
I've always been ambitious. I used to hang out in a lot
of gay clubs when I was younger and had mostly gay, male
friends. Maybe that was why I never met the right guy!
But I'm not gay, that's one thing I know. Everything
else - But not gay." However, some of her previous
lovers could be forgiven for thinking differently. Take
the time she went out with an older man. "I agreed
to go out with him because he kept sending me champagne
and flowers." she recalls. "To surprise him I
decided to dress up in drag, with my hair slapped back
in a bun, my face lightened with white powder, rosebud
lips and a three-piece, double-breasted, pin striped
suit, complete with collar, tie pin and white gloves. He
was totally speechless. The joke is, he was wearing a
tracksuit to take me to a very posh restaurant in Covent
Garden. Needless to say, he never asked me out again.
But I don't get lonely and to be honest when I get home
all I worry about is my lines and false tan. I'm not a
nun but that's all that's fit to print. I've been on
dates, but certainly nothing to write home about."
So what sort of fella does she go for? "I like a
man with a sense of humour." she says. "It
doesn't matter what he looks like. He could be really
ugly but he wouldn't be in my eyes. Of course I can
appreciate a beautiful man but he's got to be able to
make me laugh. And no, there's no one I fancy in The
Bill. If there was I wouldn't tell you anyway."
Her big break into acting came when she was spotted by
young British director Simon Rumley and cast in a
trilogy of sexy films. And she finds it funny she's
become famous playing a police women because as a
youngster she was certainly no angel. "I was a
pretty wild teenager, clubbing a lot and getting drunk
for days. Once, at 16, I stayed out for four days and
didn't phone my parents. I was quite, insulted really,
because they didn't even call the police. I stayed with
a friend who had a flat in south London and we tripped
the light fantastic - dancing, drinking and who knows
what. Dad eventually tracked me down and when he picked
me up from the station he slapped me round the face.
He'd been absolutely frantic for four days, looking
everywhere for me. "I was very rebellious and
carefree, really into all night raves and any thing
could've happened to me. When I have children I'll lock
them indoors with a key, chastity belt, the whole
deal." With showbiz in her blood - Dad's a
musician, Mum a dancer and singer - Tania's decision to
become an actress was a natural step. "My character
in The Bill is supposed to be the most
passionate, sexy new member of the cast and has very
strong storylines. I think I can live up to her and
because I'm dark and have big brown eyes I usually get
cast as sexy, passionate characters. I'm a very strong
focused women, though. Kate isn't that different from me
- except that she's currently got a love life."
