-DC Kate Spears takes on a last, risky assignment
before she leaves Sun Hill..
She looks more like a model than a policewomen. But in a
six-part Bill special starting this week, DC Kate
Spears, still upset after being dumped by Superintendent
Tom Chandler, shows her mettle when she goes after a
serial rapist and puts her own life in danger.
"It happens when Spears is at her lowest ebb,' says
Tania Emery, the 26-year-old actress who plays her.
'Normally, Spears doesn't care what people think. She
knows she's unpopular and has this tag of being the
station tart.
'But there was always Chandler there to protect her. Now
she's on her own.' And what happens to her this week is
really traumatic. At first, Kate isn't involved when a
Sun Hill operation, codenamed Magenta, is set up to
catch a serial rapist. She's with the station quiz team
on a weekend away at a country house hotel. But there
she catches the eye of handsome DS Pete Cork who takes
an invitation
to Kate's room too far - and tries to rape her.
'When a girl from the hotel is found raped and murdered
the next day, Spears has her suspicions about Cork, but
knows no one will believe her,' says Tania. ' She can't
tell anyone because they'll say she deserved it.'
Back at Sun Hill, Kate is seconded on the Magenta task
force, where not only is she horrified to find that DS
Cork is on the team, but she's then given a dangerous
assignment to act as a decoy prostitute.
The story, full of twists and turns, took three months
to film. 'It was exciting and exhausting,' says Tania.
Ironically, a few days before she filmed the climax, she
was told she was one of seven cast members to be axed.
'Yes, I was shocked and upset. But I knew I wasn't the
only one to go, so I haven't taken it
personally. And I've really taken my character as far as
I can.'
Tania leaves at Christmas, though she'll continue on
screen until early next year when she's involved in an
explosive exit. Laughs Tania: 'I'm so glad I'm leaving
with a bang!'
