In his book, The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter, author David Colbert quotes the critics John Clute and John Grant, who stated that the “classic Dark Lord” is characterized by a previous defeat that had not wholly destroyed him, a desire to be the greatest ruling power, an “abstract force” which suggests a disembodied state, a previously accomplished form of destruction, and a source of “moral collapse.”(Colbert, 2001, pp. 191-92).
