  • Oscar Araripe
  • was already internationally recognized and acclaimed as an
important Brazilian writer, educator, and social and ecological activist
well before he turned his talents to painting. With almost 100 exhibitions
to his credit, Araripe continues to reinvent the art of painting, not only
through his spontaneous and unusual brush strokes and colours, but also via
his use of unconventional materials ranging from delicate tracing paper to
large-scale public works made of weatherproof synthetic canvases (sail
clouth) supported by sturdy tubular structures.
  • About my tarot - My dream was to paint a Tarot Cards which had the image of another time and which was sufficiently liberating to overcame the erudition of the old culture, and anarchic enough to be used as pure talent. I had Just finished writing a literary trilogy - a good thirty years of intense labour - when, having already started painting, one fine day, a beautiful magician unexpectedly revealed to me for the first time the 22 cards of the Major Arcanics from the Marseilles Tarot Pack. Immediately, I was struck with the idea of a book, a silent book. For the next twenty or twenty two minutes I painted it, arranging it according to the Cardinal Points, and dividing it into 7 Celestial Card, 13 Terrestial Cards, 1 'Binding' Card - The Devil, and 2 outside the Deck (the Hanging man and the Fool). It is clear that I didn't have an exact idea of what I was doing - The whole process was rapid and completly spontaneous and only, little by little, did I perceive what I wanted from the ancient images; the first and oldest capable of manifesting the 'essence' common to all things, and the
way these alchemical visions can be realised without any great surprise. Thus the cards would never lie - and people could leave them. By pure talent!
