Lorena Babcock Moore’s work is painstaking, detailed and amazing.
The Ironwing Tarot celebrates the ancient craft of blacksmithing and its connection with shamanism. Images are inspired by nature and the Black Metal itself. Drawings are 5"x7" ink on scratchboard, and depict women only. Major Arcana are accented with red ochre (hematite): an iron ore, gemstone, and mineral pigment.
These images and her creative process are rooted in the southwestern landscape she calls home.
I am a self-taught artist and metalsmith, and a naturalist with a M.S. in Geology.
I paint exclusively in handground mineral pigments in egg tempera,
and have been collecting and using "paint rocks" for 12 years. I also work in pencil and scratchboard. All of my work is inspired by nature,
often in the formal realistic style of scientific illustration, and many paintings
have a spiritual focus related to my personal shamanic practice.
I have been blacksmithing since 1994, specializing in jewelry and shaman's
bells. Occasionally I make jewelry from copper, silver, red gold, and unusual gemstones.
My work has been exhibited in several national juried shows and has appeared in
these magazines: Journal of Geoscience Education, Rocks and Minerals, Shaman's Drum, and We'Moon ('02 and '04).
I am an experienced teacher and have taught geology, painting, blacksmithing, and
gourdcraft in a variety of settings with all ages: College geology classes, art and
metalwork residencies in public and private schools, demonstrations at conferences
and craft fairs, and women's spirituality workshops. I teach workshops on my own
methods for making and using shamanic art and tools, and have worked with individual students.
She make also The Dollar Tarot. This deck is right on the money, 22 Major Arcana on a U.S. One Dollar Bill.
