Born in 1979 in Brooklyn NY, Aaliyah Haughton sold more than a million copies of her debut album. She had a 3.8 grade point average at Detroit’s High School for the Performing Arts. On the topic of education, Aaliyah says, "School is a big priority for me. My principal has really been there to help me keep my goals as a student in hand as I work to grow as an artist."

Helped along by R Kelly, Barry Hankerson (her uncle) and Gladys Knight (his ex-wife), she has the ability to use her vocal abilities to produce songs like "At Your Best" and more upbeat hits like "Back & Forth", "A Girl Like You" (with Treach on rap vocals), as well as soundtrack songs like "Journey To The Past" (Anastasia Soundtrack) and "Are You That Somebody?" (Dr. Dolittle). She has found her place in her well established crew of Ginuwine, Timbaland, Missy Elliot and Magoo, collaborating with them on many occasions.

Her debut album went platinum and she had two gold singles: "Back & Forth" and "At Your Best (You Are Love)". When asked about her debut album, Aaliyah says, "It [her debut album] came out of nowhere, yet it felt totally natural. I was tripped out. As that first album was coming to a finish, I was listening back to the tracks thinking 'Wow, that's really me. This is how I am and how I sound.'"
Following her sucess in 1994 she toured in Europe, Japan, and even South Africa. "I still remember how nervous I was just before "Back & Forth" came out. It was my first single, and I kept wondering if people would accept it. When it went gold, I had my answer, and it was just an incredibly satisfying feeling." says Aaliyah of her first single.
