Formed in New York, NY in 1989, they have had four hit albums and a string of hit singles. They have appeared on various soundtracks, including Money Talks, Panther, Above The Rim, Waiting To Exhale and Booty Call.
They stay true to the name...Sisters With Voices. For me, songs such as "Can We" (Booty Call Soundtrack), "All About You", and "Tell Me How You Want It" (Money Talks Soundtrack) are amongst their most memorable. The trio, from New York, were influenced by New Edition and The Jackson 5. In turn they influenced groups like 702, Xscape, and Brownstone.
Influenced by gospel and classic R&B, these three girls came out of a hip hop generation. They won various talent shows and were spotted by producer Donald 'Dee' Bowden. This resulted in record demos, and landing them with a manager, Maureen Singleton. It was Maureen Singleton who negotiated the contract with RCA.
Their debut album, "It's About Time", reached multi-platinum status. They have worked with artists like Sean 'Puffy' Combs (Someone), Redman (Lose My Cool), Snoop Doggy Dogg (Gettin' Funky), Foxy Brown (Release Some Tension), Lil' Ceasar (Love Like This), Lil' Kim (Give It Up), Erick Sermon (On And On), and E-40 (Come And Get Some).
Coko's voice rang loud and clear on Will Smith's "Men In Black". She has also dueted with Johnny Gill on the soundtrack to "Booty Call", and she has recorded a track with hot rapper AZ.You can also catch her on Lil' Kim's video to "Not Tonight (Ladies Night)", the phat cover of the song "Ladies Night" originally sung by Kool & The Gang. You think that's impressive? Ther's more...She is continually kept busy, either by her son Jazz, or with the fashion company, opened with Trina Patterson, "O So Jazzi", of which Faith Evans is a client. But Coko isn't the only talented one among them. Taj is busy with her new modelling career, as well as the two loves of her life...her dogs! Not forgetting Lelee, the mother of two who moved to Atlanta so that her children can grow up with family. She makes various appearances at local schools trying to spread positive messages through song.
In fact SWV are a generally shy group. Lelee, although she took the lead vocals on two tracks on "It's About Time" she didn't want them to be released until she became more at ease with her voice. The same can be said of Taj, who herself says, "Personally, I didn't think I was ready for it [their first album] yet, because I'm really shy at times, and it's really hard for me to open up at those times".
