My wife Sharon is a commissioner for the Aurora Illinois Preservation Commission and has just signed a letter of support for the Newcastle Odeon.

Aurora Illinois has the sister theater (restored) The Paramount. The Commission is very excited about the restoration of the Odeon and about my connection to northeast England and the fact that I visited the Odeon many times for the movies.

They had received a letter requesting that support from John Matthews of the Newcastle and Northumberland Society.

My wife is an American from Arizona and I am a Boro Boy who has lived in the States for 22 years. We now live in Illinois.

I remember seeing Nat King Cole with backing music by the Johnny Dankworth Seven at the Odeon. Can anyone help me with the date? It has to be over 40 years ago!

A point of interest: Cleo Lane with Johnny Dankworth (husband and wife) were just in Illinois!

Drop me a line if you know and I'll get a Message to Malcolm!

I remember going to the Odeon to see The Sound of Music and The Beatles - A Hard Days Night.

What a pity that they want to knock it down!I do hope that the powers that be realise their mistake and keep the building intact.

Recently in South Shields a similar thing happen regarding a Small Tearoom, it was a lovely little place. The Noble group wanted to change it into another one of those Amusement Arcades.

Luckily the Council stepped in at the last moment to stop the change.

Sad to hear that the Odeon may be demolished. I remember seeing The Moody Blues at the Odeon in the 1960's.

It was a great concert and I've been a Moody Blues fan ever since. Now my 20yr olds like their music!

Whats that line about: 'What goes around comes around'?

Thanks for the newsletters and keep up the good work! I really look forward to receiving them.

I read your article on the Odeon and can't believe they want to knock it down. I remember during the 70's watching some great concerts at the Odeon. The Who played there and I have vivid memories of Pete Townsend smashing up his equipment. .

It sounds childish now but it was quite exciting at the time! It was a brilliant show. .

Peter Frampton played his first ever live concert at the Odeon on the undercard to Humble Pie - also a fantastic night's entertainment. I also used to get up at 3 o'clock to watch the great fights of the 70's there live by satellite transmission (a very unusual and complicated thing at the time!) .

Ali v Frazer, the thriller in Manilla, live on the big screen was awesome and unbelievable at the time. .

Taking my wife on our first date was to see Woody Allen's the Sleeper at the Odeon will always be dear to my heart. The picture was good but what is better is that 25 years later we are still married with much water gone under the bridge since those wonderful wonderful days. .

With regards the Odeon: Apart from the great movies, my best memories also include the concerts on Sunday nights in the 1950s. These were mostly Big Band stuff like Ted Heath and Joe Loss and many other Swing style bands.

The opposition, The Essoldo on Westgate Road had Trad Jazz shows on Sunday nights.

Both of these venues were well attended any I never saw any trouble - just good times.
