Hello Linda. Came across your website. Thought you might be interested in the following story about Rachel and James Wylie, parents of Alexander Wylie (Wiley). The stories came to me via my mother (now deceased) and via some Wylies I telephoned one day who still lived in Shigawake. Rachel Smith is said to have arrived on the Gaspe coast as a small child of 7, one of a large family. In the fall of 1826 or thereabouts, when she was around 18 years of age, there was a terrible storm which caused a ship captained by one James Leonard Wylie out of New York, to go down off the coast of Shigawake, Quebec. Rachel's father, David Smith, was one of the villagers going to the rescue of the survivors and happened to pick up James who he brought back to his house to care for. James was in pretty rough shape, and stayed with the Smiths for quite a while until he had regained his health/strength. During that time, he fell in love with the beautiful Rachel, married her, and never went back to the U.S. According to Darlene Campbell, David Smith Sr. was a farmer and a captain of his own whaling vessel. She notes, "Stories handed down say that his wife, Margaret [TEAGUE], was tall, a very good looking woman (beautiful), her skin was brown and she had long wavy hair and Rachel Smith, their daughter, apparently looked like her mother. The Smiths (descendents of David and Margaret) were referred to as the "Black Smiths", because they had dark eyes and dark hair. [David Smith] was granted farmland in 1785. The 1861 Census shows him being born in Scotland." I have always found the story of Rachel and James very touching and romantic, although have not to date been able to verify any of the details re the shipwreck. According to my mother, James Leonard Wylie was one of seven sons of a Bristol shipbuilder who all received their own sailing vessels when each turned 21. There must be some record of shipbuilders and sea captains named Wylie in Bristol, Maine, but I haven't had much luck finding anything out yet. I have always shown James Leonard Wylie's parents as being James Wiley and Jane Tousel (Touzel). The Teague line is also a very interesting line, going back many generations in the U.S., and surfing the web one day I actually found an extract of the land petition made by Jacob Teague (Tague), Margaret (Teague) Smith's father, as a loyalist to King George. You may find this of particular interest if you are attempting to prove United Empire Loyalists connections. Hope this information is of some interest/use. Sandi Smith
