This is a pretty cool site, but I'm sick and tired of all the publicity gaither is getting. At sickles high school next year there will be some changes and we'll be the ones to win state and get our names in the newspaper!!Not only will sickles have a goa keeper who won state cup with her club team, she also placed 5th in the United States Southern Regionals in Columbus, Georgia!!!! So all viewers keep a look out and don't be surprised if Walter L. Sickles has a State Champions trophy in their possession!! !!!

Your point is well-taken. Of course, not being in Pinellas this year, I could not assure the even coverage of all schools. Also, being only a spot reporter and not having a regular beat in Hillsborough, I couldn't do this county any justice either. For s me reason, we covered Tampa Catholic boys twice (probably because they were double headers with their girls team). TC had like a 1-15 record. And we barely covered the Plant boys at all. They have had an exceptional season! So, I agree with you. But p ease, also see this article because people often complain about soccer coverage, but they rarely praise it.

Ok, the season is almost over....but we would like to see some articles in the paper about any other school except CCC. When they win, they get reviews...when they lose they get press. There are other high schools in the area.. give them some credit.

Well the coin has been flipped and East Lake won. Congratulations to both teams and good luck to East Lake in the PCAC. I am amazed at the attitude the soccer coaches have towards deciding a champion. Why can't you use a tournament style tie breaker? Points first, head to head second, goal differential t ird. You may think the PCAC has no real bearing on the success of a season when compared to the state playoffs, but I can assure you it means alot to the players and parents. Add some excitement back into the game, if a tie breaker goes to goal differenti l just think how much more exciting the final games of the season would be. You have taken the game out of the hands of the kids and and put their destiny in the "easy way out" rules you come up with. I am not dissapointed with the outcome because I think East Lake would have taken the title on goal diff anyway and will represent the North County well. What your coin flip did was give false hope to one team and an a cheap championship to the other. The championship should always be decided on the field by he players performance, not in an office with a coin!

Webmaster - 01/28/99 17:44:14
Comments:
Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe they don't do that anymore, or this situation would have been avoided.
Just be aware that things are no better in Hillsborough County. They were going to decide who play wildcard games based on a coin flip. The Gaither principal complained, and it ended up being decided by overall record. Still a mess...

Seems like the PCAC is always having a controversy over who gets into the final. I am also leary of giving more points to a team for an away tie than a home tie. What do you guys think about that?

We (Pinellas County Soccer Coaches) wrote a proposal trying to change this. Pinellas County would have been divided into 4 divisions, with home and away matches. Four divisional winners would have met in a semifinal, winners go to the final. It was sho down. Anyways, based on the old method, it does not go to a coin flip. Since three points are at stake every time a team plays (winner gets 3 points, losers 0), what happens when teams tie is that the visiting team gets 2 points and the home team 1 since they re at the advantage of playing at home. Based on the old method, whoever was the visiting team when Countryside and East Lake played gets the nod in the PCAC game. I would like to register my dissatisfation in advance in the method chosen for determining the PCAC north county boys soccer champions. If Countryside and East Lake finish in a tie for first a coin will be flipped to determine the north county champ. I ca not think of a more frivolous way to name a champion. At least Rock, Paper, Scissor would be more competitive! The coin flip could be used to determine home field for a one game play off. Anyone familiar with the Cougars and Eagles know a healthy rivalry exists between these north county neighbors. A playoff game would be an excellant match. The winner would feel deserving of the championship and the looser would have given it their best effort. Shame on whomever thought of a coin flip. Neiter team, win r loose, can feel they owe there fortune to anything more than LUCK!

Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and the SP Times for the quality of coverage you provided us this year. It was a great reward for our players who worked so hard to have this acknowledgement. That especially applies to Chris Gatlyn who ade great strides in becoming a great leader in addition to being a great player. Our focus now is the National Soccer Coaches poll coming out in June. We entered the game against American with the goal of taking the top spot nationally. Although the ame was labeled as an upset, we fully expected to prevail based on our December match and subsequent improvement. There are some quality teams that have to be considered but our record this year, quality of opposition and pat performance certainly qualifi s us in the nation's elite. We would need some luck, such as a hot Klein Texas team (national # 7) going down in their state semis some of the pieces will fall into place for that to happen. I'd like to know if you can help us get info on other teams na ionally. We would really appreciate it. R. Woodard Tech Dir. / Asst Coach Bloomingdale

The page is great for the sport of soccer. It gives fans and others interested a chance to see how someone they know, or how their school's team is doing. The only negative comment I have is that it's a bit slow, esp. the main page. It takes too long to load.
