February 2003:  The Banner

In 1968-69, any self-respecting radio station identified itself at a remote broadcast by draping a colorful piece of cloth over the front of the table.  As the new station director at ten-watt WOBC, I commissioned my friend Jan Olson to make us such a banner.  She cut the letters from yellow felt and glued them onto a piece of red felt, to approximate Oberlin College's colors of crimson and gold.

I don't remember how much we paid Jan or the exact specifications.  However, the banner looked very much like the re-creation at the right.  It included our "audio radiance" slogan and probably measured about three feet by two feet.  Colorful enough for you?

Jan must have had some materials left over.  Not long afterward, I received an envelope from her, containing what you see at the top of this page:  a 6½" by 4½" bannerlet and a note ("I present to you this small thing of friendship").
