Q - B r a n c h

The music of Soviet song "Simply I work as a wisard!" would be the best background for this Page. However we couldn't find such a midi-file. With the lapse of time we shall make our own adaptation of this musical composition.

But until this moment… It would be unjust to Q - to make this Page without any music at all, because in the Bondiana movies Q is probably the only normal, real personage, not a man from a fairy tale. Yes, he creates fantastic "toys", but he himself is a man of to-day, one of common peolpe, who lives near us. This situation is similar to the one from Soviet film-tale for children and adults - "The Ordinary Miracle" - where the wizard creates good works in the tale, but always stays a kind of "out of this story". (By the way, "The Song of Wizard" from this film would be suitable too, but we couldn't find it!)

This is why and until the moment we will find something good, we suggest that you will listen to well-known melody from the Belmondo film "The Professional". Eventually, Q is a good professional too in his "wizard" work. As for plaintive musical theme, it only confirms, that we've lost Desmond Llewellyn at the end of 1999 - he played a part of Q since 1963 irremovably.

      À.Ò. Îòâåòèòü àâòîðó!

Who can tell about Q, his miracles and MI-6 better, than the British themselves? And again - the book "James Bond. The Secret World of 007" comes to the rescue and helps us. We hope, this publication will be a good advertising for it!

The Wizard of MI-6

Q himself

For years the brilliant, eccentric, yet immensely likeable Major Boothroyd, known simply as "Q", worked his magic behind the scenes at MI-6. Whenever escape seemed impossible, agent after agent - even 007, though he would probably never admit it - owed their lives to this wizard of technology. Q never expected gratitude; all he hoped was that his meticulously crafted machines would be returned "in pristine order". This survey of some of his less well-known inventions, displays just a fraction of the breadth and originality of his work of Q Branch.

Q è 007

Q took his work seriously and was irritated by Bond's frivolous quips. "Now pay attention, Double-O-Seven," he would sigh as, like a weary schoolmaster, he began to brief Bond on his latest invention. Bond rarely seemed to be listening, but Q knew, that he had an intuitive grasp of how to get the very best from any new equipment. Q's only real complaint was that hardly a single item ever came back impact.

Q's balloon

A Lot of Hot Air

Q stopped by in this patriotic balloon to pick up 007 in the end of Octopussy mission.

On Location

The Workshops inside an Egyptian pyramid

On several of 007's missions, Q set up workshops to be close to the action. For the The Spy Who Loved Me assignment, his base was hidden deep inside an Egyptian pyramid.

A Friend Indeed

In License...

"Thought, I'd pop round" - Q risked M's wrath by helping out 007 when the latter went AWOL in central America during the License to Kill mission. Here he shows Bond's friend, Pam Bouvier, a polaroid camera that fires a laser beam.

(Let's remember, that neither Q nor even the British invent laser - but the Soviet physicists Basov and Prohorov have done it. They became the Nobelists due to this discovery. Basov died recently. Prohorov is living, he celebrated his 85-years jubilee in the middle of July 2001 and continues his work in the field of physics. - K.E.)

Watch This!

The Special Watch

One of Q's great skills was his ability to incorporate exotic features - a laser beam, a rapelling line, a buzzsaw - into 007's various "standard issue" watches.
Bond used Q's rapelling watch to escape death during The World Is Not Enough mission.

"The Bondola"

The Bondola On the Square of St.Mark

At the press of a button, Q's gondola converted into a turbo-powered hovercraft. It helped 007 escape pursuit on the Venice canals during the Moonraker mission.

On the photo right - Bond makes a short cut across Venice's St.Mark's Square in Venice.

1 - A concealed button caused hovercraft controls to drop into position, 2 - Hovercraft skirt.

Ghetto-Blaster

The Testing

Not being a pop-music fan, Bond never found a use for Q's Ghetto-Blaster. It typified Q's genius for concealing weapons in everyday objects.

"Snooper"

Snooper

"A new pet, Q?" Bond inquired, raising an eyebrow. Q tested this "highly sophisticated surveillance machine" at the end of the A View to a Kill mission - and Bond had to run for cover.

      1 - Video cameras.

A Nice Set of Pipes

Playing bagpipe

When Q moved his workshop to a Scottish castle for The World Is Not Enough mission, he was moved to create a set of rocket-firing bagpipes.

Leg Pull

Q - with a special leg

Even Bond was astonished when Q demonstrated this missile launcher, concealed in a plaster cast.
