Introduction:

You and your group of soldiers are a unit in the American Civil War.  Good soldiers must learn why they are fighting.  During your quest, the commanding general (your teacher) will lead you though battles.  You will keep a journal of events and also fill in information on data sheets that you will use for a project your teacher will assign to you.  Each soldier in your unit will have a different job.  Together you will learn why each side is fighting and what it is like to be in the war.

Your task is to complete all information needed by your unit to learn about the war.  You will become an expert in the job given to you by the commanding general of your forces (your teacher).  Each team will gather information, do a project to share their information, and share their information with the whole group.

Each member of a unit will be given a specific task to do during the quest.  Below you will find a job description for each task. Students will use the Internet to find answers to questions found on data sheets given to the unit by the commanding general.  These data sheets when completed will be used by the unit to construct your final project.  A list of projects can be found under the Evaluation section of this quest.

 

Task	Description of Task
Photographer/Artist	Find or draw pictures photographs about the North in the Civil War.  You should also include maps of the major battles areas and other pictorial items that can be used in your project. Each photo, picture, or map should be labeled.
Historian	Find information on major battles, events,
Journalist/Biographer	Record information from actual diaries or journals kept by soldiers or people who lived through the Civil War.
Medical Specialist	Describe the kinds of medical treatment soldiers received, keep records of casualties, and kinds of wounds received by failed soldiers.

Conclusion:

At the end of your quest, you will have learned much about the causes of the Civil War, the conditions soldiers and civilians must have had to experience during the war, and the outcomes of some of the major battles.  Each team will present their project to the class.  These projects will increase your knowledge of the Civil War.

Evaluation:

Below you will see a matrix that will be used by the commanding general to evaluate your project. There will be 36 points possible for this project.

Below are a list of projects your commanding general may assign to your unit.

1.  Make posters with information about the war to share with your class.
2.  Make a group report.  Each team member will write a report using theinformation
     they have collected to the report.
3.  Revise and use the journal you kept and turn it into your commanding general.
4.  Write a letter to your family about what you learned about the Civil War.
     (Remember you are a soldier in the Civil War.)
5.  Make a PowerPoint presentation as a group.
