I have often been reminded by others wiser than myself that the lessons learned from some of the most dificult circumstances are sometimes the most valuable. This philosophy rings true for this particular experience. While working at Sea Island Habitat For Humanity, I learned many such lessons. In retrospect, I feel blessed to have been through this experience for it has helped shape my ideals on how I want to be treated and utilized as a volunteer and a human being.
However, at the present times, I had a difficult time rationalizing to myself and the team that the work that we were doing was purposeful and necessary. When doing redundant work of this nature, you tend to forget that even the most mundane task is helping someone or a family step closer to that dream of living in a beautiful home. However, i also learned another important lesson during this project. Just as a home needs a proper foundation below it to gel the rest into place, a sponsor must provide us consistent, tangible goals and instruction in order for us to complete the job. The organization itself must communicate and work together, unsuring us that we well be perperly utilized.
Like I said . . . life lessons come in a myriad of different ways. While this experience was a tad difficult for me, I will never forget it. The fresh callouses on my hands greatky resemble the new discoveries I have made about myself. They're not exactly easy to get used to and they're not to pretty, but you sure are proud of them.
