For those adventurous at heart, South Cumberland State Park is a great place to go. The Park offers hiking, swimming, rock climbing, repelling, and if you know the right people, 4-wheeling.

After a day of work Gold 4 was presented with the opportunity to rock climb and repel at the Stone Door area of the Park. Bill, park ranger and project supervisor, was our instructor while Lamarr, a co-worker, acted as spotter. Channing, Vicky, Anna and I harnessed up and headed to the wall where we were given a lesson on safety and climbing terminology.

For most of us, the climb up was actually the easiest part. Finding placement for our feet and hands was tricky at times, but with patience we all got to the top without any problem. Upon each of us conquering the climbing wall we moved to another area of the plateau to repel. It is here that we were told that we would be in control of our speed and direction.

It is an interesting feeling to know that you are attached to a rope that will get you safely to the ground that you cannot yet see. In one moment, as a repeller, you trust your harness, the rope, the knots, the people supporting you, and yourself. You are then slowly moving backwards off the cliff and down you go. At times there is contact with the face of the plateau, and at others you are dangling as you descent. Throughout the experience there's a smile on your face and when your feet touch the ground you can't help but sigh with relief.
