Sunday evening, the mood is mellow around camp. The group, some just back from rafting - others stretching the lounging from the afternoon into the night - is getting ready to prepare dinner. A few people are practicing fance frisbee moves. Mrs. Campbell, the camp manager, drives up in her TVA golf-cart vehicle. We are given the orders: 'AmeriCorps, you're needed at Greeter Falls for an emergency!' We look around at one another - did I hear what I thought I heard? There's a mad dash to the tents, quick uniform change, hustle to the van and we head out. As we're bound for Greeter, the mood is rather jovial. Many of us think this is a trick played on us by our jokester supervisor, Bill.
It wasn't until we reach the parking lot, when the sight of rescue workers & vehicles sobers the mood. We quickly hike the trail down to the falls where we are instantly put into part of the human chain. Our instructions are brief - Once the girl is up the cliff wall, keep the stretcher even as you carry her up the trail to the parking lot.
Our hearts were pumpng quickly, but our heads remainde cool. Because of our training, our commitment to service & our desire to be of use, we helped the rescue team bring the 18 year old woman up to safety and help.
