 Jopes's Shaft

SX265697

Depth 140 fathoms

This shaft is found on the South western corner of the workings Just uphill from the water pumping station and is the Westernmost shaft on the Southern lodes. The condition of its two engine houses are a complete contrast , one is the best preserved on the mine whilst the other one of the worst.
The Pumping engine house lies to the north of the collard and choked shaft with its boiler house on the west. The site of the Winding engine house lies off to the South East amongst the undergrowth, and cannot be seen from the footpath.

Jopes Shaft Pump Engine house
This Ivy Clad engine house and its chimney still stand to full height. The boiler house lies on its western side seen clad in vegetation.
The house held a Sims Compound engine and the shaft is of Historic importance as the site of the last Man engine to be built in Cornwall.

The winding Engine site lies within the dark undergrowth behind the pump engine house and is now no more than a pile of rubble.
