Questions concerning burning / copying / creating

When writing the Lead-In and Lead-Out the progress bar display is missing.

Writing the Lead-In and the Lead-Out is carried out autonomously by the CD burner , i.e. the CD burner program has no control over it. For many CD burners there is also no possibility to check how far the CD burner has got with writing the Lead-In or the Lead-Out. This is why there is nothing showing in the progress bar display.

Can my CD burner handle DAO mode?

Numerous CD burner can not handle burning in DAO mode. You can check this in CD-Recorder->Choose CD-Recorder to be checked. For the following CD burners this can be corrected by a firmware update:

DAO Mode can not be handled by the following CD burner :

Acer CRW1420, Hightech CD-R2006, Kodak 2600, Kodak 2801 IDE, Mitsumi CR2600TE, Mitsumi CR2800TE, CR2801TE, Olympus CDS630E, Sony CDU926S, Sony CDU928E

GD-ROM CDs can not be copied or written with normal CD burners.

Can Nero be used to create Photo CDs?

In brief: No

Reason: The Photo CD format is a standard defined by the Eastman Kodak Company to save and read picture files. The format has been kept quite simple and could be created quite easily. The licence fees that would have to be paid so that Nero can create CDs of this kind would significantly increase of Nero . This is why the creation of CDs of this kind is not suported.

Can Nero be used to copy photo CDs?

In the current Nero version the parameters of the ISO file still have to be entered.

The settings are based on the assumption that it is a normal ISO Mode 1 image file. This can be checked by opening the file with a Hex Editor. For File-Offset 08000hex (corresponds to Block 16 where the ISO ([p]rimary [v]olume [d]descriptor is saved). If there is a text there like "CD001", then burning with the above mentioned method should work.

What setting do you need to copy most CDs?

To copy CDs you are best to use the following settings.

  1. Do not carry out direct copy but burn via image. Depending on the quantity of data you may need up to 800 MB of free memory on the harddisk.
  2. Use the CD burner as a reading deivce as many reading options are only CD burner can be supported (Exception: see right at the bottom)
  3. Some CDs are oversized. Either you use 80 minute blanks or you activate the overburn option. Unfortunately there are burners which do not support either. Further down there are a few answers on this.
  4. Read speed: Depending on the quality of the CD burner or the read speed should be set accoridng to how clean the CD is. It is safest in general to read with 1x. Depending on the quality of th burner and the flawlessness of the blank, a higher read speed can be selected.
  5. Read options:
  6. The CD burner should be able to burn in DAO mode.
  7. The write speed used depends on the quality of the CD burner and the blank used. For safety's sake burn at 1x. However bear in mind that some blanks made for copying at 4x, 6x or even higher speeds may possibly no longer be suitable for burning at 1x and can cause problems when sriting and sometime not until reading the written CD.
  8. How long it takes to copy a CD with intentional errors dpends on the read drive used. Numerous drives give up relatively quickly and others don't. For CDs with intentional errors drives are better which give up relatively quickly and continue. Some (often high quality) drives in comparison are unsuitable for copying CDs of this kind because it can take hours until any progress is made at all (due to the burner internal correction attempts). In a very few cases it makes more sense to use the CD-ROM drive as the read device.

The burn speed set and the actual burn speed are not the same, why?

This case occurs if a burner recongises that the burn speed set is not possible on the blank inserted. Some burners turn the speed down, some even turn it up (!) (from 1x to 2x). As the majority of CD burner do not check the permissble speed while simulation but not until the actual burning process it is possible that the write speed changes between simulation and burning.

Nero asks before every burning process what the maximum speed is that a burner can write at (not what the minimum speed is).

Why can't I burn a CD in DAO mode?

There are several causes to this problem.

Why is it only possible to burn at 2x and not at 4x?

The CD burner can burn on CD-RWs at 4x. During the burning dialog however only 2x is

4x CD-RW burners have only popular since the beginning of 1999. Many CD-RWs can only be written with a max. of 2x. Nero asks the CD burner at what speed the blank can be written on. If 2x is now returned, then as a general rule it is due to one of the following:

How do you make CDs for MACS with Nero?

A description of how CDs of this kind can be created is in the Help of Nero .

Comment: So that Nero can create CDs of this kind, a SCSI harddisk with an HFS Partition (<600MB) is necessary, as although Nero can burn the Macintosh file system HFS, it doesn't understand it.

Nero can at the moement not yet shared Hybrid CDs burn, i.e. it is not possible to use Nero to burn a CD this way so that the files which can be seen in the HFS area of the CD can also be read from in the Iso area of the CD. Unless you burn the files double onto the CD.
