A Hike on Jones Hill

Base Meadow
One warm day Teddy and I went to Morgan Hill State Forest, near Truxton, New York, for a short, but steep, hike up Jones Hill. This is a flowery meadow we saw at the parking area.

Parking Area
Notice I finally got the VW running again (parked on far left). There's a nice camping area left of the bus. Spruce Pond is to the left in the foreground and the meadow (above) is off to the right. By the way, the roads here are closed in winter--covered with deep snow. It always amazes me to think of how completely different summer and winter are around here!

Looking Southwest
This narrow valley is called Labrador Hollow. It's several miles long and the sides are 700 feet high, but its bottom is very flat. The lake averages only 4 feet deep. This valley is typical of the glacier-carved valleys in this area that were formed 12 thousand years ago. The lake is a "kettle lake", referring to the way it was scooped out by the glacier in a bowl or kettle shape.

The Summit
The hike was short but steep. It wasn't any trouble for Teddy, but I was huffing and puffing through the steepest parts. I need to get out more...
