Salmon River

Fishing on the Salmon River
We parked on the side of the road with a bunch of other cars and followed a short path to the river bank and found all these people reeling in 2-3 foot salmon every 2-3 minutes! I've never seen anything like this before. I still can't figure out how they keep their lines from getting entangled!

Salmon River Falls
These 110' falls are only about 15 miles up the river from its mouth on Lake Ontario. Originally this must have been the end of the annual salmon run. Nowadays the state fish hatchery in Altmar catches all the salmon that make it past the fishermen. At the hatchery you can watch hundreds of spawning salmon line up at the mouth of the fish ladder and one-by-one enter the hatchery, where their eggs and milt are removed and artificially reared and eventually released to renew the cycle.

Me on top of the falls
I think I'd be standing in water if this were in spring.

Mexico Point - the mouth of the Little Salmon River
We caught a bunch of panfish on that little pier. We were trying for smallmouth bass, but they didn't start biting until it was time for us to leave. Next time we'll plan to stay later. The Little Salmon River is actually a separate, but nearby, river from the Salmon River.

Looking up the Little Salmon River
This is a rather busy little river. A boat came up or down about every 2 or 3 minutes. Afterwards we discovered there a big marina up the river and there are a lot of waterfront homes on the riverbanks.
