11:00 pm Go down the the galley for breakfast. Breakfast at 11pm ?. No need to make my bed, the steward will do that. Say "good' morning" to the steward on the way to eat. |
11:30pm Go to the change room for a pre-tour safety meeting. A 12 hour shift is called a tour (pronounced tower). Before each tour the drill crew and all the other companies meet to discuss what wll be done in the next 12 hours |
11:50pm I head into my work area and have a handover with the mudlogger who is working on days. We talk for 20 minutes or so and he tells me everything of importance that has happened during his tour. |
The work day. I collect samples, look at them in a microscope, record what I see, all the while keeping track of the level of mud in the pits and gas levels. If any equipment or sensor breaks, I have to fix it. I make sure the data is being stored in the database. At some time I must plot a log and make a daily report |
11:50 am. The day mudlogger comes into the area and we talk for 20 minutes. This is the handover. |
12:10 Time to eat. This takes 15 minutes as the food is all cooked and there are no dishes to wash (not for me anyway) |
12:30 relax in front of the TV for 30 minutes |
1:00am The exercise room for 45 minute to an hour. It usually has a stationary bike, a treadmill and some weights |
1:45: Hit the showers |
2am Watch TV or read for about an hour |
3am Lights out and hope that there are no problems during the day shift or else I might get woken up at any time to help |

This a four man room. Most workers prefer two man rooms. The room is usually shared with a worker on the opposite shift. |
