NILP's services to the mental health community...

NILP's services to the mental health community are by and for self-directed individuals who have experienced the mental health system first-hand as "patients" or clients. We are committed to our own recovery process and to EMPOWERING others to achieve self-reliance, self-determination, and full civil/social rights.

Their (NILP's) services (to the mental health community) are available FREE of charge to all consumers, survivors, clients, and/or patients of the mental health system who are 18 years or older. Through skills development, the program enables participants to move toward the goal of taking and maintaining control of their own lives. To achieve this level of independance means to become empowered with the skills to excercise responsible self-care, and to recognize choices and options that lead to fuller participation in one's community.

SERVICES THAT OPEN DOORS TO INDEPENDANCE:

-the Lawrnce Organizing Voices for Empowerment (LOVE) group is a grassroots (non-profit) organization whose members are all mental health consumers, or ex-patients. This member-controlled group's purpose is to create a voice for change in the mental health system, while claiming the power that belongs to those who receive services from the system.

-the Haverhill "Warm-Line" is a telephone support network run by and for persons with psychiatric disabilities. This service deals directly with non-crisis calls and provides support around daily living issues.

-Advocacy for in-patients at the Tewksbury Hospital Mental Health Units (part of NILP's services to the mental health commumity) offers technichal assistance and support to hospitalized patients. Peer Counseling and support are offered to persons wanting assistance in getting what they want and need from their treatment teams.

-Information and Referral (an NILP service) assistance pertaining to legal, financial, housing, and other issues is ongoing via telephone, or face to face contact.

-Annual consumer run and controlled conference, a yearly event completely organized and controlled by consumers. This event offers oppurtunities for networking, education, and information sharing. The 1998 event (the 10th year anniversary of the conferences-which are titled 'NO SURRENDER' will be a two-day event, instead of the usual one day event.) The 1998 event will be held in N. Andover, MA, USA. and the date is set for mid June 1998, I will provide more complete information about the exact dates, and the exact location sometime in April or May 1998.
